Jewellery Care

The value of a personal relationship to things is that it creates intimacy and intimacy creates understanding and understanding creates love. - Anaïs Nin

Precious metals are organic materials; they come from the earth and are refined and worked by hand using centuries-old techniques to be turned into the unique adornments of intimacy you wear today.

Over time, jewellery can develop a natural patina; a dark and dappled glow that manifests on the surface. If you desire, you can restore shine to the surface of your jewellery by buffing gently with the polishing cloth included in your order - or embrace the new unique characteristics your jewellery takes on as it ages.

Oxidisation, stain and matte finishes are specialty surface treatments that do not penetrate the metal itself. With regular wear, matte and satin finishes will burnish and oxidisation will fade -- but can always be reapplied. It is not a flaw but a natural response to being loved. As such, these pieces should not be buffed vigorously with your polishing cloth as this will simulate the natural wearing of the treatment.

Jewellery should not be worn in the shower or swimming pool. A splash of fresh water will not harm your piece but do not let it come into contact with household chemicals such as detergents, bleaches, toothpaste or chlorine.

Always store your jewellery in a cool, dry, safe place such as the box it came in; away from extreme heat, steam and humidity.

What's the differences between metals?

In my studio, I primarily work with the alloys pictured above; Sterling Silver, 9ct and 18ct Gold.

Pure Silver is considered too soft for daily wear as jewellery, so the pure metal is alloyed (mixed) with a little Copper to get it’s strength and durability. Sterling Silver is 92.5% pure Silver and 7.5% Copper. The Australian standard hallmark for Sterling Silver is a 925 inside an oval.

Like Sterling Silver, pure Gold is also too soft for daily wear as jewellery; so to increase it’s strength and durability, pure Gold is alloyed with other metals such as Silver, Copper, and Palladium, resulting in the different carats (and colours) of Gold.

9ct Gold is 37.5% pure Gold, and 18ct Gold is 75% pure Gold. The higher the carat, the higher the purity of the gold, and the deeper in tone it appears. The Australian standard hallmark for Gold alloys is 375 or 750 inside two conjoined circles.

Pure Gold is naturally dark yellow in colour. The Yellow Gold alloy consists of pure Gold, Silver, and Copper, mixed in the right proportions to keep the tone Yellow.

Rose Gold is a mixture of pure Gold, Silver, and a higher percentage of Copper, which is how it gets it’s romantic warm red hue.

White Gold is a mixture of pure Gold and Palladium. The natural colour of White Gold tends to have a slight yellow/grey tint. Commercial White Gold jewellery is often plated with rhodium to give it a bright white shine. Over time the plating will wear off, exposing the true colour of the metal. I do not Rhodium plate my White Gold and the colour you receive will appear as above, in it’s natural alloyed tone.

What is your studio's position on sustainability?

Most Alicia Hannah Naomi jewellery is made to order. This is an environmentally unburdened business model where every piece is made with intention, and the studio does not create in excess.

All Alicia Hannah Naomi jewellery is made from recycled metals. Metal supplied by my vendors comes recycled already, and scrap metal that is produced in the studio, right down to the tiny flecks of glittery metal dust, known as lemel, is collected and sent away for recycling.

There are currently no established bodies that trace the gemstone supply chain from mine to market. I source gemstones as ethically as is possible, from fair-trade suppliers in India and Afghanistan, through to local Australian suppliers, lapidarists and fossickers.

My ring size isn't an option on the product page, can I have a piece made in a custom size?

Yes, a custom sizing service is offered for a nominal fee. Please contact the atelier to discuss your sizing needs.

How can I work out my ring size?

The most accurate way to learn your ring size is by visiting a local jewellery store to be sized professionally by the assistants using specialty sizing tools. Using 'circumference' measurements taken by paper or string are extremely unreliable and will almost always result in a ring that does not fit you.

The atelier offers products in size range from UK K – UK Z depending on the design. Please view the size chart for approximate conversions. The atelier is based in Australia and uses the UK (wheatsheaf alphabetic) sizing system measured from the centre-back of the band.

It is extremely important to be sure of your sizing before placing your order. The atelier does not accept returns on rings that are the wrong size due to customer error or change of mind, and some pieces cannot be resized.
