Description

One-of-a-kind 2ct Natural Black Diamond surrounded by a molten pool of polished white gold, spontaneously rippling into areas of dark frothy distressed texture.

The diamond has visible flaws and sits low in the setting - the culet can be felt against the finger from the inside of the ring. Please read below to learn more about this very unique piece.

Artist's Notes: Typically, diamonds are a single solid stone; but black diamonds are bound together by internal inclusions that hold millions of smaller pieces together. As a result, such heavily included gemstones - especially very large stones such as this 2ct stone pictured - have their inclusions end up on the surface during cutting where they become visible to the naked eye.

Visible inclusions are considered extremely undesirable in the jewellery industry, partly because they spoil the overall visual effect of a well-cut gemstone, but also because they make the gemstone more susceptible to damage such as fractures and breakage.

But artistically, there’s something about the inherent fragility of included gemstones that is poetic and beautiful to me.

The light crack across the table of this black diamond (fourth image) is one of several visible flaws in the stone. I chose to embrace them, and created a rubbed-in setting for the stone into the setting in order to protect it’s natural vulnerabilities.

However, feeling distracted by the haunting voices of all the curmudgeonly old jewellers of eras past, who would be offended by such a flawed diamond, I made a miscalculation and accidentally set it too low. The result was that the culet (the pointy tip of the diamond) sits exposed, poking out on the inside the ring; digging into the skin of the wearer. I didn’t even realise until it was already set.

Due to the fragility of the diamond I decided not to unset the stone and remake the setting; instead I gently rounded out the culet with a diamond bur to smooth it off and give it a chance to be worn as comfortably as possible in its existing state.

This ring is a paradox; by nature and now by name. When I talk about celebrating the elegance of imperfection, I can’t think of anything more fitting than this; a diamond deeply flawed, embraced by flowing precious white gold. Redeemed, then ruined again, now celebrated.

This ring is size M½  and is ready to ship.
