JEWELLERY CARE

The value of the personal relationship to all things is that it creates intimacy and intimacy creates understanding and understanding creates love.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

HANDLING AND DAILY WEAR

To prevent accidental damage to your new adornment, Alicia strongly recommends removing your pieces before bathing, swimming, exercising, domestic cleaning or sleeping.

Apply perfumes, lotions, and hair products before putting your jewellery on to avoid direct contact between your self-care products and your jewellery.

STORAGE

Store each piece individually, ideally in its own soft pouch or original box, protecting each piece against scratching each other in storage, tangling, and unwanted oxidisation.

Necklaces and pendants should be stored flat, allowing chains to lie naturally without kinks or bends.

Avoid contact with hard materials such as steel or concrete, exposure to harsh chemicals like chlorine or bleach, and extreme temperatures.

CARING FOR YOUR CEREMONIAL RINGS

Just as you regularly service your car, your precious rings also benefit from regular preventative care.

Stone settings are the most delicate elements of your jewellery. They are vulnerable to impact and abrasion from harder materials like steel, stone, and concrete. Even diamonds—renowned for their strength—can chip or loosen if they sustain repeated knocks. Such contact can happen quietly during everyday tasks, sometimes without your noticing, so routine checks are essential for longevity.

Precious metals like gold, crafted intentionally for beauty and form, have inherent softness and flexibility. This means your jewellery is suitable for daily wear, but requires mindful handling to prevent dents, scratches, or more significant damage.

An annual check for preventative maintenance is highly recommended. If you can’t return your piece directly to the Alicia Hannah Naomi studio, a reputable local jeweller can perform a basic inspection. However, if repairs are recommended, please ensure you return your jewellery to Alicia Hannah Naomi for servicing.

Please note that guarantees of craftsmanship and liability are conditional upon careful wear and proper upkeep. Work performed by an unauthorised jeweller will void your guarantee.

Additional care advice

Alongside regular inspections of stone settings to ensure gems remain secure, it is wise to periodically examine chains, connections, and clasps for smooth and secure functionality.

If your jewellery exhibits sharp edges, catching, or if clasps fail to latch correctly, please stop wearing the piece immediately and arrange to return it to the Alicia Hannah Naomi studio for professional care.

CARING FOR SPECIFIC METALS AND FINISHES

BRIGHT SILVER

Over time, particularly if left unworn or stored for extended periods, Bright Sterling Silver can develop a subtle patina—a temporary, darkened or lightly dappled surface discolouration.

If desired, you can gently restore your silver jewellery’s original shine by gently buffing with the polishing cloth included in your order. Alternatively, embrace the unique characteristics that emerge as your piece ages.

The best way to prevent patina is to wear your jewellery often.

For stubborn patina on your Bright Silver jewellery, Alicia recommends returning the piece to the studio for a professional clean and refinish for a nominal fee.

BLACKENED SILVER

Blackened Silver refers to silver that has been oxidised, then selectively polished back to reveal natural silver highlights on raised areas, while leaving the blackened effect in the crevices. This finish continues to evolve through wear, with highlights becoming brighter over time.

A gentle hand with your complementary polishing cloth will maintain this look—take care not to buff too vigorously, as this may prematurely lighten the darker areas. Avoid store-bought silver cleaners entirely, as these products will chemically strip the blackening resulting in a dull, grey, and sometimes chalky finish.

If desired, the Blackened finish can always be refreshed by returning your piece to Alicia Hannah Naomi for reapplication.

BLACK SILVER

Black Silver refers to silver that has been oxidised all over, creating an entirely black surface across all silver areas.

This deep, solid-black finish is a surface treatment, and can be delicate; typically wearing away more noticeably with frequent contact or friction. Over time, edges and raised surfaces will naturally lighten, revealing silver beneath.

To slow this effect, handle your Black Silver jewellery carefully and avoid vigorous cleaning; use your complementary polishing cloth sparingly, with the gentlest touch. Do not use store-bought silver cleaners, as these products will chemically strip the blackening resulting in a dull, grey, and sometimes chalky finish.

To restore your piece’s original deep black appearance, the oxidation can be reapplied by Alicia Hannah Naomi upon request.

9CT GOLD

Over time, particularly if left unworn or stored for extended periods, solid 9ct Gold jewellery can develop a subtle patina—a temporary, darkened or lightly dappled surface discolouration.

If desired, you can gently restore your gold jewellery’s original shine by buffing very gently with the polishing cloth included in your order. Alternatively, embrace the unique characteristics that emerge as your piece ages.

The best way to prevent patina is to wear your jewellery often.

For stubborn patina on your 9ct Gold jewellery, Alicia recommends returning the piece to the studio for a professional clean and refinish for a nominal fee.

14CT AND 18CT GOLD

These high-purity solid gold alloys are highly resistant to patina.

You can gently restore your 14ct and 18ct Gold jewellery’s original shine by buffing very gently with the polishing cloth included in your order.

CARING FOR SPECIFIC GEMSTONES

WHITE AND COLOURED DIAMONDS

With daily wear, white or coloured diamonds can occasionally become dull and lose some of their natural brilliance due to accumulated grime.

To gently restore their sparkle at home, squeeze a small drop of mild dishwashing liquid into a microwave-safe bowl and add boiling water. Allow the water to cool slightly to approximately 80°C (176°F), then soak your jewellery for 10 minutes. After soaking, carefully buff your jewellery with an ultra-soft baby’s toothbrush to remove grime from intricate details. Rinse under clean water and pat dry gently with a soft cloth.

BLACK, ICY, AND SALT & PEPPER DIAMONDS

Unlike white and coloured diamonds which are typically chosen and graded to be free of inclusions, Black, Icy and Salt & Pepper Diamonds contain unique feathers and inclusions that create their otherworldly aesthetic elegance.

While diamonds are renowned for their hardness as a mineral, these particular stones and their inclusions form natural fissures within the stones, making them more sensitive to damage from knocks, impacts, temperature changes and harsh chemicals.

To protect these stones, always remove jewellery during physical activities such as exercising, swimming, domestic cleaning or manual work. Avoid contact with hard surfaces, abrasive materials and harsh chemicals.

Clean these pieces gently at home using mild soap, warm water and a soft cloth. Never use ultrasonic cleaners or expose them to high heat, as this may result in irreversible damage.

SAPPHIRE, RUBY AND SPINEL

With daily wear, sapphires, rubies and spinel can occasionally become dull and lose some of their natural brilliance due to accumulated grime.

TOURMALINE, EMERALDS, TURQUOISE, OPALS, PEARLS

Gemstones with heavy inclusions or a porous structure, such as emerald, opal, tourmaline, turquoise and pearl—require extra care due to their delicate nature. These stones can be brittle or susceptible to damage from knocks, temperature changes and harsh chemicals.

OTHER SEMI-PRECIOUS GEMSTONES

Semi-precious gemstones with a Moh’s hardness score of 7 or below are slightly more delicate than harder minerals. These softer stones may not always be ideal for everyday wear, as they can more readily accumulate subtle marks and gentle wear, visibly chronicling their journey with you over time. While not necessarily fragile, their surfaces will more quickly reflect the textures and experiences of daily life, developing unique character through use.

With daily wear, non-porous semi-precious gemstones can occasionally become dull and lose some of their natural brilliance due to accumulated grime.
